"Sapina" - the holy spring in the woods

This beautiful forest spot near Timshino, Egorievsk district, has been known as a sacred place long ago. The locals believe that the Virgin Mary icon once miraculously appeared on one of the little springs. It is known that the little wooden chapel and a few monks' houses ones existed here. There also was a holy water pond for the pilgrims.

The place was so popular that in 19 C. it had been appointed for a big monastery (the construction cite has been moved later to the neighboring settlement Kolychevo). In the Soviet time the chapel has been destroyed. Some locals still remember it as well as the log monks' houses, which masters also had disappeared.

In the autumn of 2001 the icon of St. John the Baptist, the patron of the monks was installed on the place of the former chapel, nearby the holy spring. The place is situated 800 m off the road “Egorievsk - Kolomna”, on the right side. The right turn to the forest may be made on “16 km” post
