S. Esenin
«Anna Snegina»

The famous Russian poet Sergey Esenin wrote these lines about Radovitsy. Once his granny took him, a boy, for the pilgrimage here. That time they were two of thousands people visiting this piece of Old Holy Russia.

The legend names the first local monk Pakhomy, a Greek who had came to this place in AD15C. The silence and beauty of the small island among lake made him to choose this wild place to live and pray.

In 16C, another monk, Iona found here an icon or St. Nicholas made of the whole piece of apple tree. Then a special wooden church was built for the icon. The monks witnessed 250 miracles, which had happened around the icon in 16th century only. Trying to restrict the icon's popularity and keep things under control Peter the Great took it to Moscow. But shortly after his death it had been returned back and continued to make wonders.

In 18C the monastery moved from the island to the nearest shore and widened its territory.

The Bolsheviks closed and ripped off the monastery in 1930-s. But part of its walls, chapels and fraternity blocks still can be seen, as well as an old monastery well which still in use. The visitors can visit the island (it is a peninsula now) where Pakhomy lived in his shelter and see the place where the miraculous icon was spreading its blessings and healing power over. The place has auto access all year around.
