Site administration of Egorievsk

Egorievsk museum of History and Fine Arts

The museum is situated in the center of Egorievsk in the newly restored 19th century house of the merchant Nikitin. The 1500 square meters exposition offers the finest samples of Russian and European fine art of 18th-19th centuries: wood and bone carving, metal casting, glass, china, pottery, embroidery and oil canvases. The most part of the collection was purchased for the museum by the Bardygins, the merchants' family in the time of the town's industrial prosperity (1910-1917). The modern interiors of the museum were designed by one of the top Russian artists, academician E.A.Rosenblum.

The central museum collection reflects life of all social groups of the 18th-19th century Russia: peasants, merchants, landlords and clergy. The very specific part of the exposition relates to the spiritual heritage of the local folk: primitive art, old believers' handwritten books, wood carved icons and crosses.

The old building of the museum (which is in 5 minutes walking distance) exposes the original archaeological collection of the brass Finnish women's decorations of AD10-11C from Zhabki, the first discovered in 1870s burial ground of Meshchera, the Finnish tribe which had been living in the area till AD16C. Since 2001 the Museum has own archaeological expedition which runs the excavations in the area of these medieval Finnish settlements. The expedition would be glad to cooperate with other organizations in its field of activity.

The museum offers a number of excursions and sightseeing tours for Egorievsk and its surroundings. The Old Egorievsk, included into the list of the Historical cities of Russia, will definitely impress you with its well-preserved charm of the provincial life of the 19th century and our guides are always ready to show you the town and its district. The Egorievsk district, being one of the biggest centers of the Russian old believing, definitely is worth seeing with its traditional rural wooden architecture and a number of the historical places. Besides the beautiful natural scenery you will see a the old believing and orthodox cult sites (holy springs and chapels). We also would recommend you to visit Zhabki, the site of the medieval Finnish Meshcherian settlement, where the Russian speaking descendants of the tribe still live in the area.
